Mall with Added Value

Leipzig Central Station, built at the beginning of the 20th century, is not only an imposing structure and the largest terminus station in Europe, but also the location of the Leipzig Central Station Promenades. The largest shopping center with a rail siding in Germany is located in the middle of the city center, is highly frequented and is therefore the ideal destination for a public place that invites you to visit and linger.

Together with ECE, kplus konzept developed a unique refurbishment concept that offers travelers, visitors and the residents of Leipzig new dwell and shopping qualities with a modern character and higher service quality. The three shopping levels were structured thematically according to the main shopping motives of visitors.

"The systematic analysis of the customer journey by kplus konzept and the strategic positioning of the resting points and seating islands as touchpoints has paid off, as can be seen from the customer frequency. The high quality of stay in the middle of the hectic hustle and bustle of travelers and shoppers is an extraordinary gain for the location. The signage system with the welcome gestures completes our refurbishment concept in the Leipzig Central Station Promenades."

Problem Zones in the Shopping Station

Promenaden Hauptbahnhof Leipzig

The tasks for the refurbishment were clearly defined: The aim was to create the best possible quality of stay for visitors in the midst of the hectic station atmosphere and to introduce a contemporary look with a new interior design. A responsible task, considering such a picturesque and significant building as the Leipzig train station with its monumental entrance hall. Thus, in the development of the design concept, design languages from different centuries were to be smoothly reconciled.

Promenade in Focus

We decided to take up the "contemporary promenade" as the lead story in the design. The natural associations of a promenade - relaxedness, a sense of well-being and warmth - could be transferred to the mall in this way. And the existing name of the “Promenaden Hauptbahnhof Leipzig“ thus manifests itself visually in a unique design story.

We developed a network of resting points and seating islands that, through design and construction, shield those resting from the surrounding commotion without compromising visual contact and proximity - after all, it's the hustle and bustle of the public that makes a place attractive.
These lounges are inspired by comfortable travel on stylish trains: Upholstered benches are modeled on the shape of train seats, and transparent windshields keep drafts away from the seating areas. Other seating elements are reminiscent of suitcases and luggage.

The wooden look of the furniture is borrowed directly from the promenade theme: It transforms the lounges into warm, cozy oases in the midst of the pompous open-plan architecture. The seating zones were positioned in the area of the atriums so that the permanent communication between the floors was strengthened. The different colors of the upholstered seats and lounges improve orientation on the three floors.

A memorable line graphic is the common thread running through the new interior concept. It is derived from the track bed in the terminus station - where many connections meet at one point. And from there, they drift apart in all directions. As a defining link, the pattern appears in variations in the ceiling linings, on the lampshades of the lounge lights, signs, as column cladding and on the ceiling motif of the centrally located rotunda.

Future-oriented real estate marketing - this requires state-of-the-art solutions for your customer communication. In the course of the new refurbishment and to support leasing, kplus konzept developed a B2B website , which seamlessly transfers the new design concept of the Promenaden Hauptbahnhof Leipzig into the digital world. Here, a customized interactive web application for the presentation and selection of individual rental spaces was also developed, for more efficient tenant/buyer communication and a simplified marketing and leasing process.

The design performance of kplus konzept also included the analysis of the touchpoints of arriving passengers and visitors from the city. Systematically, all initial touchpoints were associated with the new interior design concept. At key intersections, the existing escalator entrances and exits were enclosed and upgraded with portals visible from afar. For better orientation in the restructured shopping station, kplus konzept developed a sign system that indicates the routing non-verbally and "at first glance" at portals and escalators.
